Columbia is where Missouri Junkers does most of its work, and where its best customers are. Cole and Isy are based in Moberly, 35 miles up US-63, but on a normal weekday the truck is in Columbia. That's the honest picture: a Columbia job isn't a road trip for them, it's the day.

It's also the market with the most specific problem in mid-Missouri. In April 2025 an EF-1 tornado destroyed the city's recycling facility. The city suspended recycling and closed its drop-off centers, and Boone County's drop-off sites — Hallsville, Sturgeon, Ashland, Hartsburg, Rocheport, Harrisburg — went with them. As of this year they're still closed, with the occasional one-day event standing in, and a replacement facility is years out. Bulk material that used to ride to a drop-off on a Saturday has been stacking up in Columbia garages for over a year. One of their own customers said exactly that in his review — the garage "had been piling up after the destruction of the recycling centers in Columbia" — and they cleared it in one visit.

Then there's the rental side, which is most of Columbia. The University of Missouri, Stephens College, and Columbia College put thousands of leases on the same calendar: out at the end of May, in by mid-August, with a second wave around the winter break. East Campus, Benton-Stephens, and the blocks north and east of downtown are dense with houses split into student rentals, and every one of them has to be empty and clean between one lease and the next. Landlords and property managers with a dozen units on the same turnover date are the people who call most.

Outside the campus neighborhoods it's a city of ranch homes and split-levels — Old Southwest, the streets off West Broadway and Stadium, south Columbia out toward Rock Bridge and Nifong, the newer subdivisions north off Rangeline and around Vanderveen. Decades of garages, basements, sheds, and decks that have reached the end.
